Honda gx120 wont stay running

Some repairs require a professional mechanic. Other repairs are more straightforward; you can do them yourself. InHonda launched an updated version of its GX engines line. Examples are construction and industrial equipment, generators, and agricultural equipment. They are also suitable for pressure washers and water pumps.

The GX series engines have appealing features such as good fuel economy and lower noise levels. They have a reputation for their fuel economy as well as durability and reliability.

Keep in mind these are broad small engine troubleshooting tips. For detailed mower troubleshooting, generator troubleshooting, etc. Check the spark plug for damage or wear. You may see a cracked insulator, a burned-away or damaged electrode, or heavy carbon buildup.

If so, replace the spark plug. You can also use a spark plug tester to see if the spark plug is defective. After some time, parts within the fuel evaporate. They leave a sticky substance behind that clogs up the carburetor. Where you find it hard to start the engine, your engine may be getting too much or not enough fuel.

A clogged carburetor is usually the culprit when the engine stops after running a few seconds or more. Another common cause is a faulty fuel cap. A faulty cap keeps the engine from starting or makes it harder to start the engine. As the engine consumes fuel, pressure rises in the gas tank.Buying Advice. Pro Talk. When I choke it to start the mower the engine will run until the choke is shut off and then it dies. I have removed the carb and completely cleaned it- removed main jet and venturi tube, ect. What the heck am I missing here? Any suggestions would be appreciated-Thanks!! Joined Aug 10, Threads 34 Messages Joined Aug 14, Threads 11 Messages This really sounds like a clogged main jet, but you said "I have removed the carb and completely cleaned it- removed main jet and venturi tube" I find it best to run a tag wire up and into the main jet "then" spray some cleaner.

The tag wire can remove grit that may be tightly wedged in. Then the spray will wash away the loose remains. You can do this just by removing the float bowl. Joined Oct 6, Threads 10 Messages I've got the same engine and it's doing same thing. I also went through the carb but that didn't help. Bought new carb fron Honda, that didn't help as it does the same thing. I pulled muffler to eliminate it and still will only run with choke on. I even pulled the valve cover and everything in there looks fine.

I'm at my witts end with this engine.Starts easy just won't stay running. New air cleaner, I even took the fuel line valve off and put direct hose to carb. The engine model is GJAE, 5. I've had this three times, each time cured by changing the spark plug.

The head was spotless but the inner spark gap area was sooty. I did this two days ago with my GCV and it no longer cuts out, in fact it runs most sweetly. How old is the gas in the tank? If over 30 days, drain it, put in new gas, clean off the spark plugs, spray carb cleaner into the carb while it is running, and try again.

Sounds like a "varnished up" carb, sticks the float. Air filter clean, oil ok, new plug, carb looks clean but GumOuted it anyways. Will try the starting fluid and see if it keeps running, tehn will check fuel filter.

Replace the fuel filter, it's probably plugged up so that it lets enough fuel through for the vehicle to start, but not enough for it to keep running. Answer Save. Morris B. How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer. Still have questions?

Fill pump housing with water. Static suction head too high. Lower the pump closer to the water. Suction hose too long.

Reduce suction hose length. Leaking suction hose. Repair hose or repair coupler seal. Strainer plugged. Clean strainer. To eliminate debris collecting around the strainer, set the strainer in a submerged bucket. Internal pump wear or damage. Perform a vacuum test: Fill the pump with water and attach a vacuum gauge to the suction port. Remove the discharge hose and start the pump.

Move the throttle to fast. The gauge should read at least 20 inch Hg. If the vacuum is low and the engine speed is correct, there is an internal problem with the pump worn components, etc. If the engine speed is too low, there is a problem with the engine engine worn out, governor problem, etc.Click here to learn more. Gx carb running choke only Discussion in ' Mechanic and Repair ' started by precision8mFeb 24, Messages: I have a lesco core aerator with the 4 hp Honda gx and it will only run with full choke. I had a hard time getting it running in the first place. It would only run if you sprayed carb cleaner into the intake, so I took off the carb and cleaned it out.

When I put it back on, it started right up with full choke, but if I moved it to half choke or open, it would die. Has anyone else had this problem or know what the solution might be. I don't think I have any air leaks as I have tightened the carb onto the engine pretty tightly. Messages: 11, Remove the float bowl screw, Under this screw is the main jet RestrorobFeb 24, I did this already. Carb spray flew through there pretty well. If the engine only runs on full choke there's a restriction in the main circuit of that carb, Try cleaning again Messages: 2, As Rob indicated, clear the main jet as he described.

It the fuel nozzle didn't fall out when you removed the main jet, with the flat of a screwdriver reach into the venturi and push the fuel nozzle down and out of the barrel of the carb. If I remember semidecent, there are about 12 little ports in the fuel nozzle that become obstructed.Click here to learn more. Log in or Sign up. Sign up now! The machine only has around hrs on it, however it had unfortunately been sitting with fuel in it for around 9 months.

So, I have diagnosed it to the best of my ability and I believe I have narrowed it down to carb issues or fuel delivery. I have already done the following The motor will fire and try to sputter for a moment every once in a while, however only on choke.

It will also try to start if I spray starting fluid in the air intake for a moment on choke, however it dies just like it has carb issues. But if I drop the carb bowl I get fuel, however it flows better with the cap off.

Thank you all very much for your help an or suggestions! You went with a pretty expensive way to figure out the problem first.

Will the engine run smoothly while spraying starting fluid in the engine while it is running? Is there consistent Spark? Well it could be a valve issue or Last Resort a clogged Muffler. Can you put a few pictures of the engine?

Net horsepower more closely correlates with the power the operator will experience when using a Honda engine powered product. The power rating of the engines indicated in this document measures the net power output at rpm rpm for model GXH50, GXV50, GX25 and GX35 and net torque at rpm, as tested on a production engine.

Mass production engines may vary from this value. Actual power output for the engine installed in the final machine will vary depending on numerous factors, including the operation speed of the engine in application, environmental conditions, maintenance and other variables.

Once the engine is up and running, the Auto Choke automatically returns to an optimal operating position. This system, which is connected to the camshaft, reduces compression by opening the exhaust valve slightly when the engine is being started.

This reduces the amount of force needed to start the engine and improves starting performance. The system disengages automatically after the engine starts to prevent any power loss during normal operation. Its lighter piston and other moving parts help keep vibration to a comfortable level. A truly innovative combination of a compact combustion chamber, overhead cam configuration and uniblock construction significantly reduces fuel and oil consumption as compared to conventional side-valve engines.

Plus, simple construction has minimized the number of parts, making the engine more reliable and easier to operate. The electronic governor minimizes governor droop. This increases available power. For most normal engines, available power is decreased when the engine is approaching wide open throttle. Upright, sideways, even upside down — the Mini 4-Strokes will still run great.

An exclusive Honda rotary-slinger lubrication system keeps oil in a completely misted state and circulates it using pressure fluctuations generated by the movement of the piston. Built-in passages effectively return the circulated oil to the oil reservoir from every part of the engine.

An oil return port positioned in the center of the reservoir prevents oil from accidentally flowing into the combustion chamber. This substantially reduces both oil consumption and the emission of unburned oil in the exhaust. The results include better all-around environmental performance and operating costs that actually decrease the more the engine is used! It offers the highest V-Twin compression ratio on the market. The power is transmitted through forged-steel connecting rods and a forged-steel crankshaft, supported by a full-pressure lubrication system.
