When I choke it to start the mower the engine will run until the choke is shut off and then it dies. I have removed the carb and completely cleaned it- removed main jet and venturi tube, ect. The tag wire can remove grit that may be tightly wedged in. Then the spray will wash away the loose remains. You can do this just by removing the float bowl. Bought new carb fron Honda, that didn't help as it does the same thing. I pulled muffler to eliminate it and still will only run with choke on. I even pulled the valve cover and everything in there looks fine.

I'm at my witts end with this engine.Starts easy just won't stay running. New air cleaner, I even took the fuel line valve off and put direct hose to carb. The engine model is GJAE, 5. I've had this three times, each time cured by changing the spark plug.

The head was spotless but the inner spark gap area was sooty. I did this two days ago with my GCV and it no longer cuts out, in fact it runs most sweetly. How old is the gas in the tank? If over 30 days, drain it, put in new gas, clean off the spark plugs, spray carb cleaner into the carb while it is running, and try again.

Sounds like a "varnished up" carb, sticks the float. Air filter clean, oil ok, new plug, carb looks clean but GumOuted it anyways. Will try the starting fluid and see if it keeps running, tehn will check fuel filter.

Will the engine run smoothly while spraying starting fluid in the engine while it is running? Is there consistent Spark? Well it could be a valve issue or Last Resort a clogged Muffler. Can you put a few pictures of the engine?
